All four will represent Lourdes in the 400 Free and 200 Medley relays. Jason Boyko and Christian Thomas, both having competed at States in past years, will each swim individual events as well. All agree this weekend is the best way to cap off a terrific season, and for the seniors, a bittersweet but great way to end their high school careers. Here are some of their thoughts in their own words:
Stephen Baker - “I have been swimming competitively since the age of 12, My best events are the 200 and 500 freestyle with personal bests of 1:53:09 and 5:05:3 respectively. Two years ago, I switched club teams in hopes of improving and experienced dramatic success. I am thrilled to have qualified on the relays with my teammates and am happy to have spent my last Lourdes swim season on a great team with great teammates. Even with graduating nine seniors last year, many being our top swimmers, we were able to come back and form an incredible team this year. We actually placed higher at sectionals than we did last year. I am very excited to be going to States. I am also a little sad to realize that this will be my last swim meet as a Lourdean; however, States will be the perfect end to a great last season. I plan on swimming in college, whether it be on the school’s varsity or club team. I plan to major in Biology and am looking at Binghamton, Columbia, Manhattan College NYU, UCONN or Penn State.”
Jason Boyko - “I am from Poughkeepsie and attended Holy Trinity before coming to Lourdes. Swimming competitively for the past 11 years, I look forward to the possibility of continuing in college. My best events include butterfly and freestyle, and I particularly enjoy competing in the relays. This year we had a tremendous season that brought fun times and even better memories. I am very proud of the Lourdes Swim Team! I am excited to get back to the State meet and am looking forward to great results!”
Jason Cruz - “My best events are the 50 & 100 freestyle. This season I had to work hard to get the times I wanted. We had a great season as the team really pulled through and we gave it our all. We shined at Sectionals! As a sophomore, I am going to miss my senior teammates who are personal friends, and I will continue to give the OLL swim team my very best and nothing less. I made the State cuts in both of my best relays. Although my individual times were short of the cut, I know with continuous work they will improve. I am using this opportunity at States as a learning experience for my career and to do the best I can for my teammates, who are all phenomenal swimmers and real friends.”
Christian Thomas - “I am from Wappingers Falls and began swimming at the age of six. Best events include 100 back, 200, 100 and 50 freestyle. This season we thought might be a rough start with new coaches and swimmers however, the new swimmers worked hard and we had an outstanding season. I am very grateful for the coaches for working so hard to help me. Coach Boyko is a real help for the team and it’s been an honor to swim under him. I believe Lourdes is setting high standards for years to come. I am so happy to be competing with my teammates at my last State meet. It’s been quite the ride and should be an exciting meet. Hoping for a podium finish to end the season with a bang!”
Best of luck to these young men this weekend as they continue to shine and put Lourdes swimming on the map. We look forward to seeing more from them in the future!
