According to Mr. Buzi, “Mei and Gabriella were instrumental in putting the club together. They approached me about moderating the club because they knew I had done work in non-profits earlier in my career. They have been the driving force behind all of our activities along with a terrific group of students who have helped with fundraising, digital promotions, and getting the word out in person. We are currently working to raise money for Smile Train, but the club has the goal to raise awareness and money for a number of international non-profit organizations in the future.”

From May 10th to May 16th, members of STAC sold tickets for an ice bucket challenge to support Smile Train, a progressive cleft charity that helps train local doctors to perform cleft surgery and provide comprehensive cleft care in their own communities.

Tickets were sold during school lunch periods, where the students were able to purchase three tickets for $1 and place the tickets in one of the 14 participating teachers’ buckets. In addition, the participating teachers could pay $2 for 2 tickets from their bucket to be moved into another participating teacher’s bucket. The five teachers with the most tickets agreed to have a bucket of ice water poured over their heads. The participating teachers were Mrs. Merryman, Mrs. Vilardo,
Mr. Buzi, Mr. Weiler, Mr. Petruzzelli, Mr. Maggi, Mrs. D’Aleo, Mr. Hamel,
Mrs. Junjulas, Mr. Cwalinski, Ms. Brooks, Mrs. Berkeley, Mrs. Murphy, and
Mr. Keenan. At 3 pm on May 16the tickets were counted and the five winning teachers were Mr. Cwalinski, Mr. Weiler, Mr. Petruzzeli, Mrs. Vilardo, and
Mr. Maggi. Congratulations and thank you to all who participated. STAC was able to raise over $250 for Smile Train that will provide for one surgery. Look for more exciting projects from this group in the future.
